High-Speed PLA Guide: How to Print at 600mm/s Without Sacrificing Quality

The era of waiting 24 hours for a medium-sized PLA print is officially over. With the rise of CoreXY machines like the Bambu Lab X1C, P1S, and Creality K1 series, print speeds have skyrocketed from a sluggish 50mm/s to a blistering 600mm/s. But there is a catch: your old PLA filament cannot keep up.

If you try to push standard PLA through a hotend at 600mm/s, the plastic simply does not have enough time to melt. The result? Under-extrusion, weak layer adhesion, and failed prints. 1. The Science of High-Speed Filament

What makes a filament "high-speed"? It comes down to the Melt Flow Index (MFI). High-speed PLA is formulated with specific modifiers that lower its viscosity when heated. This allows the extruder gear to push the filament through the nozzle with less resistance, even at extremely high volumetric flow rates.

Additionally, high-speed PLA is designed to solidify rapidly once it leaves the nozzle. At 600mm/s, the printhead lays down layers so quickly that the previous layer barely has time to cool. 2. How to Optimize Your Slicer for 600mm/s

Even with the right filament, you need the right slicer settings to achieve flawless results at maximum speed. Here are the golden rules for printing with QTS High-Speed PLA:

  • Increase the Nozzle Temperature: Because the filament spends less time in the melt zone, you need to compensate with higher heat. We recommend 220°C to 230°C for high-speed printing.
  • Maximize Volumetric Flow: In Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer, ensure your Max Volumetric Speed is set to at least 20-24 mm³/s for our High-Speed PLA.
  • 100% Cooling: Turn your part cooling fans to the maximum setting. The faster you print, the more aggressive your cooling needs to be.
  • Slow Down the First Layer: No matter how fast your printer is, a solid foundation is critical. Keep your first layer speed under 50mm/s to ensure perfect bed adhesion.
